Product Recall by Mattel Toys, 2007 - est. $14 million in fines

In December 2008, Mattel reached a settlement with 39 states to pay $12 million to educate the public about the dangers of lead paint and lead poisoning.

On 5 June 2009, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission fined Mattel $2.3 million for violating the Federal lead paint ban; while Mattel agreed to the fine, no wrongdoing was admitted on the company’s part.

US West Coast Port Lockout, 2012 - est. $8 billion in losses

The strike cost Southern California, a region still struggling to recover from a prolonged economic slump, an estimated $8 billion, including lost wages and the value of cargo rerouted to other ports over the past week.

It marked the worst cargo traffic disruption at Los Angeles and Long Beach - which together account for nearly 40 percent of all U.S. container imports - since a 10-day lockout of longshoremen at several West Coast ports in 2002.
